Hi there,
Thanks so much for the great review! In answer to your question, the City of Detroit granted us access to the department with no creative control. It was a months-long process of discussions about the scope of the film. We maintained that we would be honest and fair and they trusted us, bit by bit. It was a bold and courageous move for a beleaguered administration, but one we are grateful to them for. You'll notice in the film we don't discuss the history of Detroit or the "how we got here" — we presume any American with a basic education has an understanding of that. We also don't point fingers, because that's not compelling storytelling. Our goal at the outset was to make an apolitical film that focuses on who these guys are and the work they do. The best war films aren't about war, but about the guys who fight the fight. They get into your heart and they stay there.
Again, thanks so much for the great review!
Best,

Written how a review should be, nice work.
Very well written. Will be looking forward to more movie reviews by Mr. Franks.
This is a good review. I especially appreciate your idea about the communicative sigh.
This is a beautiful film, filled with quiet miracles.
I'm glad you appreciated this film. I think that Claire Denis is one of the best directors working today and that this was probably the best film of 2010. I only wish that this review had less synopsizing and more of your thoughts.
"took a rather radical stance that, in hindsight, the whole world now takes for granted: Wall Street can not be left to regulate itself."
They do? The public, perhaps, but I can't say I've heard about any sweeping reforms in financial regulation. Last I heard, Obama appointed a gang of Wall Street insider thugs to run the treasury. There haven't been and aren't going to be many Eliot Spitzers, ready to go head to head with these guys.
Re: Insidious
The films strongest points were the score and the visual stuff. Wan clearly isn't a great director of actors (nor writer of dialogue) and much of the first two acts were bogged down by weak performances from the leads (and especially the "exorcist"), despite being punctuated by some genuinely creepy moments. The third act, far from going off the deep as you indicate, was the strongest part of the whole film. Wan can dispense with the weak (and overdone) exposition and the canned horror film performances from mom, dad and the Farelly bros. chick and focus on what he seems to have a talent for: visuals.
I see you didn't bother to review UNCLE BOONMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS PAST LIVES. I'm conflicted about this. On the one hand, you've neglected to give exposure to one of the most brilliant films in recent memory. On the other hand, you've reenforced your own irrelevance and saved me from shaking my fist one more time at this rag you call a weekly while reading yet another inept misinterpretation of a great movie.
Oh, and no review of CERTIFIED COPY either. Repeat the above.

loved this film! I got so worked up about it.
Great review..my thought was that the actors are just too pretty for the movie to be much good..
I thought Brief Interviews... was a solid first attempt from Krasinski. And, I loved Away We Go. Needless to say, "post-modern hipsters" should enjoy the rest of his career.
Lots of good stuff to see ... wahoo.
