Timmy's Organism
Living, Breathing Thing
Known predominantly for his work as the frontman of the Clone Defects and Human Eye, Timmy Vulgar has spent over a decade being the definition of punk rock. In his new group, Timmy’s Organism, Vulgar has taken center stage by recording wacky tunes on his four-track recorder that blur the lines between punk, pop and glam rock. This week will see the release of the band’s double seven-inch on Sacred Bones with a coinciding release show at PJ’s Lager House on Tuesday, April 28. Real Detroit Weekly talked with Timmy about his group and the expectations of himself and others on his new project.
What made you want to do something different than Human Eye and have it under your own name, Timmy’s Organism?I just did all this stuff at home when I was bored on my four-track by myself. I didn’t really have a name for it and I didn’t really want to call it Timmy Vulgar. I called it Timmy’s Organism because it was going to be used for Reptile Forcefield, but we all wrote those songs together so I didn’t want to use it for that. I didn’t like that name at first because most people think it’s Timmy’s Orgasm. It’s funny it shows how people are thinking about sex. It’s really just my own little project, my own little organism.
What did you set out to sound like? I don’t have a drum machine and that’s what most solo bands are doing today and it sounds new wave. When I first recorded by myself, I had Johnny Lzr’s [Human Eye’s keyboardist] synthesizers at my house and I just started messing with those. Then I made some fake percussion with a sampler keyboard … I was just trying to do some ambient, noisy stuff, but that still had melody. It’s pretty free, but with the band it’s more stripped down rock ‘n’ roll like The Clone Defects.
People have come to expect you to be crazy all the time. Do you think Timmy’s Organism might take some newcomers by surprise?I notice a lot of bands that get a lot of notoriety play like powerpop and shit … I guess I was experimenting with whether I can make a pop song ... I guess I was experimenting in the pop field. |
