Lo-Fi At Its Best
The Thermals
I could see myself dancing at a Thermals show — hard to admit considering people in Detroit don’t really dance and my dance moves make me look like I’m having a bout of epilepsy. Their latest album, The Body, The Blood, The Machine, isn’t just a great pop-punk album — it’s also a concept album. It tells the story of a young couple who need to flee a United States government run by fascists. The television politics are boring, so just listen to the Thermals instead. Real Detroit caught up with singer/guitarist Hutch Harris before they embarked on tour.
What is your generalization of the indie rock scene today?I think a lot of indie rock is boring. There’s a lot of it I like, too, though. I think all the best stuff comes from Portland.
It must be something in the water. It must.
So you guys turned down $50,000 for one of your songs to be used by General Motors in a commercial. Do you guys know how much $50,000 is? Was that the hardest decision ever?
It was not a hard decision at all. We’re not really into songs being used for commercials. Well, we’re not really into our songs being used in commercials — especially for Hummer. |
