The RDW Guide to Voting

title.jpg

As an alt-weekly and entertainment publication, we do our damnedest to provide you all the necessary info to go out and party your ass off. Interested in art, theatre, live music, booze, food and the like? We have you covered across the board, 52 weeks a year. But every so often, we would like to turn our focus to some other info that it is vital to you, our adoring readership. Not only do we elect a president every four years, but there are also a number of local and state issues that require your participation on 11/6 as well. That said, we thought we'd give you a little help in understanding what's what, from Mitt vs. Barry to the confusing wording in the six state proposals that you'll see on your ballot as well. This isn't a "Rock the Vote" or "Vote or Die" campaign, but we did break down which candidate you should vote for based on your interests and lifestyle – and also re-worded the proposal verbiage (let's face it, the original language was like having a conversation with the Riddler). And remember, just because Morgan Freeman has played both God and the President in his film career doesn't mean they'll count him as a write-in. | RDW

The Prez: Red Vs Blue

What do you listen to on your drive into work/school?

Obama – Ben Folds, Lady Gaga, Jay-Z

Romney – Kid Rock, Beach Boys, Lynyrd Skynyrd

What's the deal with our reliance on oil and why the hell am I paying so damned much to fill up my Land Rover?

Obama – "By ending government subsidies for oil companies and investing in cleaner sources, we can become a global leader in clean energy, creating American jobs and businesses while improving our environment and national security." (barackobama.com)

Romney – "Mitt will approve the Keystone XL pipeline, establish a new regional agreement to facilitate cross-border energy investment, promote and expand regulatory cooperation with Canada and Mexico and institute fast-track regulatory approval processes for cross-border pipelines and other infrastructure." (mittromney.com)

What's in your Netflix queue?

Obama – Star Wars, Twin Peaks, Do the Right Thing, Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Romney – The Hills, CSI, Pirates of the Carribean, Scary Movie

Have you ever said...

Obama – "I think Ellen DeGeneres is great, but I have the hardest time telling her and Justin Bieber apart when he's the special guest."

Romney – "You know, Elisabeth Hasselback has a point there..."

Who's hotter?

Obama – Kim Kardashian, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Whoopi Goldberg

Romney – Heidi Montag, Julianne Hough, Lindsay Lohan, Suzanne Somers

What about the gay community?

Obama – "President Obama was the first sitting president to publicly announce his support for marriage for same-sex couples, and has always believed LGBT Americans should be treated fairly and equally." (barackobama.com)

Romney – "Marriage is more than a personally rewarding social custom. It is also critical for the well-being of a civilization. That is why it is so important to preserve traditional marriage – the joining together of one man and one woman." (mittromney.com)

Not that any of you watch it, but...

Obama – Lisa Ann

Romney – Jenna Jameson

The Proposals: What do they mean?

Proposal 1 – Emergency Managers Should there be criteria established for the state to assess the financial condition of local government and should the governor be in charge of appointing an emergency manager (who would then develop financial and operating plans until the emergency is resolved)?

Proposal 2 – Collective Bargaining Should employees have the constitutional right to bargain collectively through labor unions? Should we invalidate current or future laws that limit joining and supporting unions (also prohibiting public employees from striking)? Should state laws that regulate hours and conditions of employment to the extent that those laws conflict with collective bargaining agreements be overridden?

Proposal 3 – Renewable Energy Should it be required that electric utilities provide at least 25-percent of their annual retail sales of electricity from renewable energy sources – wind, solar, biomass and hydropower – by the year 2025? (And limit it so that no more than 1-percent yearly rate increases charged to consumers only to achieve compliance with the renewable energy standard?)

Proposal 4 – Home Care Should we allow in-home care workers to bargain collectively with the Michigan Quality Home Care Council and require the MQHCC to provide training (including the creation of a registry of workers who pass background checks, set minimum compensation and conditions of employment) and provide financial services to patients to manage the cost of in-home care? This would additionally preserve patients' rights to hire in-home care workers who are not referred from the MQHCC registry, but are bargaining unit members.

Proposal 5 – New Taxes Should there be a two-thirds majority vote required in the State House and the State Senate, or a statewide vote of the people at a November election, in order for the state to increase or impose new taxes?

Proposal 6 – Constructing New Bridges and Tunnels Should there be a statewide election and in each municipality to determine where "new international bridges or tunnels for motor vehicles" are to be located before the state uses funds or resources for acquiring land, designing, soliciting bids for, constructing, financing or promoting new international bridges or tunnels? (Also keep in mind that this would change the wording going forward from "new international bridges or tunnels for motor vehicles" to "any bridge or tunnel which is not open to the public and serving traffic as of January 1, 2012.")
