The Pipettes
If you haven’t been following current trends in British hipster novelty exports, let me explain The Pipettes to you. They’re a retro-styled girl-group (insert obligatory Shangri-Las/Phil Spector reference here) from Brighton, England. There’s this puppet master-ish guy called Monster Bobby who — in the background — plays guitar, writes songs and co-founded the group with a singer/poet who’s no longer in the band. The new lineup consists of three ladies, Becki, Gwenno and Rose, who have adopted the last name Pipette (it’s that kind of band).
British kids — high on Amy Winehouse’s beehive-induced mushroom cloud of vintage hairspray fumes — love The Pipettes and their big single, “Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me.” So does Pitchfork. Me? Well, not so much. But Becki was super nice to chat with.
Are you in tour preparation mode?Actually, no, we haven’t been at all. I tried manically to get people to rehearse and unfortunately everyone was off doing other things … so, we’ve got this weekend where we will be practicing about as much as we can possibly do. I’m looking forward to finally being busy again. Personally, I hate doing nothing. It’s really dull.
You can’t relax? No, gosh no. I just hate it. Like, this is the longest we’ve had off in ages and I don’t know what to do with myself. It’s just horrible.
That’s what they invented the Internet for!But it gets really dull, and I’m really bad at surfing the Internet. There’s only a few sites that I go on and just like check my mail and that’s about it. |
