If you've  been to a show or sporting event downtown and not visited The Old Shillelagh (pronounced Shil-lay-lee), you’ve never had the full Detroit experience. John Brady and Charlie Taylor opened the doors to this legendary Irish bar in 1975. Two generations later, the place is still evolving and going strong.

“At The Old Shillelagh we're very versatile. We constantly transform the layout of our bar to fit any situation. We try to plan ahead to throw the best party downtown for every event or just for a summer weekend night,” says co-founder, John Brady’s granddaughter and third generation manager, Shellie Lewis. “Everyone needs somewhere to go that when they walk in the door, the bartender knows what they're drinking and there's someone at the bar already for them to join that they know. Not only is that a great thing for our patrons, but it makes going to work a lot more enjoyable.”

Centrally located on Monroe Street in the heart of Greektown, the bar is famous for its green shuttle bus, carting patrons to big entertainment venues like Comerica Park and Cobo Center.

“I love downtown Detroit! Everyone that has a business, works, goes to school or just hangs here regularly is part of a little downtown family,” Lewis says. “Between The Shillelagh, The Well, Delux Lounge and The Baltimore, we've created a great destination or neighborhood for anyone looking for a great time out."  | RDW
