The Melvins

Freak Puke

★★★

Punk/metal/insert-genre-here stalwarts the Melvins return for their eighteenth studio album with a new, stripped-down lineup they've taken to calling "Melvins Lite." Nothing light here, though; the band might be down to one drummer, but they don't seem to have lost any of their edge. Freak Puke doesn't bring anything blindingly new to the table, but it's got plenty of attitude and volume; sometimes those simple recipes are the best. And that's not to say the band completely phones it in for the sake of being loud either: dig the lurching cover of Wing's "Let Me Roll It," a puzzling but very pleasant surprise.

Worth a Listen: "Leon Vs. the Revolution"
