Baby, Come on

For loyal RDW readers, that fact that we love The Hard Lessons is no surprise. Though it seems hardly a week goes by when they don’t give us something to write about, we’ve yet to fully fall into EVERY temptation — but we just couldn’t ignore this week’s show at Arts, Beats & Eats. The Hard Lessons are in sort of a transitional phase right now, with drummer Christophe “The Anvil” Zajac-Denek leaving the band for West coast adventures. And the entirely different adventure at hand would be the incredible journey of marriage — Augie and Ko Ko Louise recently tied the knot. In preparation for their show at Arts, Beats & Eats, we talked with Augie about, what else, arts, beats and eats.

Tell me about the creation of the cover for B&G Sides.
We’re all huge fans of vinyl. Emily Gustafson is an amazing artist and we wanted to do something interactive with these four separate CDs, and it seems like having her break down a bigger painting that could all go together and it makes collecting these fun and gives it a whole other experience.

How is the search for a new drummer coming?
We’ve been contacted by a lot of people that want to play with us. We’re just kind of waiting to move forward with anything, I’m sure something is going to fall into place. Right now, Ko and I have already laid down seven new songs with Zach Shipps at his studio and it’s some of the most organic recording we’ve done. The B&G Sides project really opened our songwriting up a lot. We spent a lot of time experimenting with different genres and recording techniques, which led us to what we’re doing right now, kind of a no rules approach. We’ve got Zach Shipps and some other special guests playing some drums on the record.

Favorite Detroit area eats?
I got married last weekend and we had a bunch of friends in town from Brooklyn and LA and we took them to Slows. I love that place. I love the WAB in Ferndale. Of course Arts, Beats & Eats and Tastefest I love, too. If anything, we overindulge. I remember one Arts, Beats & Eats we were pigging out before the set and then we ran back to our stage to play and I burped into the microphone. That, to me, sums up Detroit summer food and music festivals.  | RDW
