Road Trippin'
Team Detroit Embarks On Chevy SXSW Challenge
This week, laid-back Austin's the destination for the South By Southwest Conference, the industry elbow-rubber that brings the biggest names in music, art and interactive media together under that big open sky. But for Henry Balanon, captain of Chevy Team Detroit, which is sponsoring an interactive road trip contest to SXSW, it’s the journey that counts. Balanon, an iPhone app developer, will lead a team of four local social media heavyweights in a cross-country scavenger hunt vs. eight national teams to SXSW. But there are a few wrinkles in the plan. Wrinkle #1: They won’t have a map … just a series of clues to help direct them. Wrinkle #2: they’ll have to complete 50 missions in three days, while blogging, tweeting and driving 1,500 miles (the winner gets the tweetup to end all tweetups).
“We’re each supposed to submit missions that our local social community has voted on,” Balanon explains. “GM will pick their 50 favorites out of all of them for every team to complete.” So that means this idea probably won’t make the cut: “Dress Henry up like a garden gnome and take pictures of him at every landmark you cross.”
Balanon has never taken a road trip of this magnitude before. But the SXSW Interactive Conference, the tech industry’s biggest event, is a major draw for making business connections. He explains: “A: it’s a huge road trip, and B: ...” he pauses, trying to find the words, then gives up. “It’s a big party, too.” |
