Formerly a church, St. Andrews Hall and its downstairs stage, The Shelter, host a variety of local and national indie acts. One of Eminem's first hip-hop gigs was at the legendary Shelter hip-hop nights downstairs.
"A booming sound system, cheap drinks and plenty of room to jump around — when we're diggin' some spittin' then St. Andrew's is at the top of our list. There's no backstage, so young MCs can even try to mingle with their favorite stars or slip them a tape. All of the Detroit greats, as well as a slew of national hip-hop artists, cite St. Andrew's (and its basement venue, The Shelter) as one of their favorite places to play, and the stage where they got their start." -Best of Detroit 2010
