Snow Patrol has put together an album worthy of nothing more than the activity the band's name suggests. Imagine yourself having to do a fortnight patrolling the icy tundra, having only a small lantern, and knowing that your trusty beast Zelda, the king of all St. Bernards, is long dead and will not heat thy body. You might die out here. But fear not! This new Snow Patrol album demands nothing of you. It just is. No demands, no excitement and no surprises. This, of course, is all well and good, as you need to keep your head clear and stay alive. But that's par for the course no matter what release we're discussing for Snow Patrol, whether it's Eyes Open or Final Straw. There were upbeat moments, perhaps even instances of splendor (for lack of a better term) on both of those releases. This album, Fallen Empires, simply exists. Let there be no doubt, however, that there are singles from this album that will make their way into the mainstream (TV, radio, movies, soundtracks, etc.), simply because that is how the machine works. Otherwise, if you're taking this release for what it's worth, it is what it is.
