Pat O’Brien’s
St. Patrick’s Day Destination
Praise the Irish, St. Patrick’s day is here again. Who isn’t stoked? After all, it's another day with a good excuse for all of us to day-drink without social shame. Just as the Gaelic saying goes: “An Irishman is never drunk as long as he can hold onto one blade of grass to keep from falling off the Earth.”
Hence the reason we celebrate this proud heritage: so we can drink, laugh, share good company and live the feeling of forever having good times in genuine places — like Pat O'Brien's. “This is the quintessential neighborhood bar,” says owner Lou Colombo. “We’ve been here for 64 years. That’s just what it is.” Lou and his wife, Cathy, bought this bar directly from the O’Briens on their 60-year anniversary. That is, after it already had a reputation as a St. Clair Shores hotspot. “This is the town’s bar,” says Colombo. “My biggest challenge was to not screw it up, and I think we’ve done pretty damn well.”
RDW couldn’t agree more. After all, Colombo kept with the old-school traditions that make this tavern such an excellent reminder of the good old days. One is their famous perch, which put Pat O’Brien’s on the map. Another is their St. Patty’s Day festivities. “We have one of the largest parties in Macomb County,” assures Colombo. “We throw up a 4,000-square-foot tent and have the same great party that we’ve had for 15 years.” And that tent harbors limitless splendors — we’re talking unforgettable Irish grub, a whole lot of alcohol and live music. “We work really hard at this business,” assures Colombo. “We want it to be better and we love it.”
Pat O’Brien’s is one of those establishments we love to compare to fine red wine — they just get better with time. As for why Colombo thinks you should come? “Because I have seven fuckin’ kids and I gotta pay for college,” he admits with a laugh. You had us at hello, but your argument helps, too. |
