Mid-Winter BMX Blowout

Modern Skate and Surf

Recent snowstorms have left Michiganders snowed in, cold and even in the dark. But the Modern Skate Park in Royal Oak is prepared to add fun for people with the Mid-Winter BMX Blowout 1/22. The Blowout will feature a Pro/AM contest and concert. Brandon Dosch, Dew Tour Cup National Champion BMX rider, will be there to judge the contest and sign autographs. First place winner of the Pro BMX contest will win a guaranteed $400. General admission is $10; pro contest entry $25; AM contest entry $20; and to ride with the pros is $15. All costs include free admission to the concerts with included bands Sheefy McFly and The Delorean, Drawn to Fury, Alotta Nakedness and more. Modern Skate Park is located at 1500 N. Stephenson Hwy. The Dueling Chainsaws Speed Carving Extravaganza will be back by on Saturday, 1/22. The Home Depot Kids Zone will be located in the Hot Spot Warming Tent on 1/23, starting at 1 p.m. Other children's activities at the festival include a petting farm and a scavenger hunt. Live music and entertainment will add to the frosty festivities on Saturday and Sunday. Opening ceremonies in Kellogg Park, Friday at 7 p.m., will feature celebrity hosts, an ice ribbon carving ceremony and live crowd participation. A 20-foot-tall ice-torch at the new Fire & Ice display will be lit shortly after the event begins. For more info, check out plymouthicefestival.org.

Motown Winter Blast

Campus Martius

Bundle up and get out to the 2011 Motown Winter Blast 2/11-21/13. Free ice-skating is offered in Campus Martius Park and is only one of the event's main attractions. Expect a variety of over 50 entertainment acts highlighting local talent on two festival stages. Kids are welcome at the Meijer Kid's Family Fun Zone and will also enjoy ice sculptures in the Quicken Loans Ice Garden. Heated tents and local buildings are festival Comfort Zones. This year, a small admission fee will make a big contribution to Matrix Human Services. Each visitor can either donate a canned food item, a book or $1 to gain entrance. Matrix's mission is "to break the generational cycle of poverty gripping the city of Detroit." For more info, visit winterblast.com and matrixhumanservices.org.
