When I called, it seemed I had caught Matt Pond at a weird moment. The formerly-sorta-somber-but-getting- ever-more-poppy frontman for Matt Pond PA, who recently released their seventh album, Last Light, at first came off as perturbed — or at least a little distracted.
Turns out he was just in the middle of dealing with running the business that comes with having your name in lights.
You OK? You sound …
Oh, I was just answering stupid questions about stupid shit … that’s, like, what I do.
Did you just do another interview?
No, we were talking about our stage setup for colleges. It was a person at our label and they’re like, “Well, what size stage would you prefer to play on?” And I’m like, “What kind of crazy question is that?! One we can fit on! I don’t know … like, fuck!" I don’t think of myself in feet constantly, like, oh well it’s probably like 13-and-a-half. I’m like, "What a fuckin’ dumb question."
Do they make those little diagrams of where your amps go and stuff?
Yeah, we just redid our stage plot yesterday, so that was actually kinda fun. I was like, “I’d like it bolder.” So then we made it bolder. So that was cool. That’s the fun you get to have.
This is not what you signed on for.
No, you wouldn’t even begin to know how involved I am in this corporation.
But, secretly, you like it a little bit.
