Luna

A club like Luna hardly needs an introduction. An icon of the nightlife scene in metro Detroit, its reputation tends to proceed itself. Merely mentioning to your fellow weekend warriors that you'll be making your way out to Main Street in Royal Oak tends to drum up quite a bit of excitement and when I personally found out I'd be heading there for the first time ever to review the scene for this very column, it has to be said that I was pretty pleased.

A pleasant distance away from downtown Royal Oak, a Saturday evening usually finds Luna filled to the brim with metro Detroiters ready to get their fill of both drink and dance. Currently dressed up in Halloween-themed décor, the dance floor was already reaching capacity at the early hour of 11 p.m. during my inaugural visit.

For those, like me, who've never made it out to Luna, you're truly missing out. The embodiment of the perfect dance club, this place is outfitted with a stage, strobe lights, spot lights and really, really good dance music. The staff is friendly and fun and their patrons are the same.

With doors opening up at 9 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, Luna sticks to what it does best: providing metro Detroiters with arguably the best club scene around. Strictly a drinking establishment, you'll want to eat before you arrive, considering you're going to need plenty of energy to dance all night.

Oh, and speaking of dancing, that is exactly what this place is known for and the area in which they truly excel. Starring the regionally famous Luna Dancers, the club hosts themed dance nights every week in which the company of performers lead the masses in attendance in motif revelries that range anywhere from Detroit to Michael Jackson to alternative dance music.

As far as the bar experience goes here, flat screens line the walls throughout Luna – broadcasting fun and interactive music videos, pumping up the dance atmosphere and adding just that much more to this place's appeal.

Music videos are usually the main substance fed through those TVs, but this week Tigers games will be streaming over the flat screens at Luna, making this your World Series party-central.

With two bars inside Luna, you won't be waiting around all night to get a drink – even when this place is shoulder-to-shoulder. You'll be pleasantly surprised that drinks won't cost you and arm and a leg here either. In fact, most night you can get any drink for $2 until 11 p.m.

Suffice it to say the folks behind Luna have managed to create the ultimate club experience. Housing a photobooth as well as a couple of pool tables, there is something to entertain anyone who decides to make this place their evening's destination.

While we wholly recommend this place year-round, it's especially fun during the Halloween season. On 10/25 they be hosting their annual Halloween dance show where you'll find not just those aforementioned signature dancers, but a ton of costumes and campy fun as well complimentary drinks from 9 to 10 p.m. courtesy of M-1 Studios. Now go forth and dance!|RDW
