Luder
The Detroit Debut
Luder is a mysterious beast to catch. Just when you think they’re going to lull you into your happy place with soft-but-not-boring guitar work and vocals peaceful enough to soothe Genghis Khan, they turn it all on its head — smashing into your eardrums with a crunchy riff and tons of feedback. They take the loud/soft dynamic of bands like the Pixies to a whole new level, weaving delicious soundscapes that you could practically walk around in.
Rising from the remains of the '90s band Slot, Luder blends elements of stoner rock, jazz, shoegaze and metal into music that’s been described as “disturbingly peaceful.” According to bassist and vocalist Sue Lott, “We play until something we like happens. There are enough disparate influences and likes and dislikes to make it really interesting.”
This incarnation of the band — Lott, Eric Miller on drums, Phil Dürr and Scott Hamilton on guitar — hasn’t played a show yet. Our Birthday Break event is to be their first and, “I really don’t expect much weirdness for this show. I have a feeling we will do a straight-ahead live rock show performance as we have little patience for kitsch, gimmicks or vaudeville,” Lott says.
After what will no doubt be a spectacular performance, Luder will head to SXSW. “We’re talking about a couple of festivals. We’re kind of playing it by ear. None of us really expected this to be as much fun as it is or as good as we think it is, so whatever happens is gravy.” |
