Hot Nights Of The Week
MONDAY
Woodbridge Pub
Despite being Woodbridge’s busiest night of the week, Slow Jam Monday is the ideal way to start your week mellow. Playing vinyl and only vinyl, DJs like Erno the Inferno and Frank Raines spin '60s and '70s funk and soul, with an occasional reggae record. Parched from all the groovin’? There’s $5 PBRs and shot combos all night.
Goodnight Gracie's (Royal Oak)The Real Detroit creative team reinvigorates after Monday deadlines with help from The John Arnold Trio. A blend of world music, jazz and funk, there's no better trio in Detroit. Arnold on guitar, Pathe Jassi on bass and percussionist Rick Beaman. “As an active Detroit artist, I value my Monday night sessions for the fact it allows me to keep forwarding my skills as a guitar player,” Arnold said. “Plus after banging people’s faces off all weekend with DJ sets there, it’s nice to pick up my guitar and play a ballad.” Really you must hear them!
TUESDAY
Black Lotus“There’s something spiritual going on at this place,” world jazz and amazing guitarist Sean Blackman says about Black Lotus Tuesday nights.” We agree. Magic does happen on with Koozhava, the sultry band that kicks out jazz, salsa, tango, funk, samba and more. “And the musicians are so fucking talented … every Tuesday is like a vacation for me. I go there, play music and click out.” Add the non-smoking chilled atmosphere, organic brews, good-looking crowd and yeah, it gets hot.
5 Elements Gallery A weekly get-together celebrating women in hip-hop? Sign us up! At 5 Elements Gallery, The Foundation is a night of b-girls, open mics and showcases. DJs Mel Wonder and Sticky Niki spin the soundtrack for this night of expression and all things hip-hop culture. Don’t miss the workshops from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Dooley’sDooley's in Roseville has perfected the art of the themed par-tay and throws a weekly bash with contests, prizes, gifts and décor every Tuesday. This week is the LBD (little black dress) party. Any lady wearing this classic number gets a wrist band good for a drink and the chance to win $250 gift cards from a variety of clothing stores.
WEDNESDAY Mon Jin LauYoung, urban professionals — the beautiful people type — have come to Shanghai Wednesdays for years for its coveted Nu-Asian cuisine. Then they linger for the party afterward. We can’t think of another spot that has held such popular stature this long. Oh, if we had to request our last supper it just might be the Szechwan Eggplant with Tofu.
Roger's Roost “It’s not just about the mugs, it’s bigger than that now,” says Carl of Roger's Roost in regards to the Ugly Mug night every Wednesday. Bring in your own mug and get it filled for three bucks. Carl’s correct; Roger's Roost has become the preeminent spot to be on Wednesday for a diverse cliental, not just beer.
Northern Lights LoungeEven if you don’t know about the large historical impact Dennis Coffey has had on Detroit’s musical landscape, don’t feel like you can’t imbibe in a little Dinner With Coffey on Wednesday nights. Every week the legendary guitarist rips through a special jam session and, even if “Scorpio” did come out in ’71, he hasn’t lost it.
Shores InnMen ... this is your kind of ladies night! Everyone gets in free and both genders can participate. Dawn from the Shores Inn gives away everything from tanning packages and haircuts for her ladies' night raffles. And you don’t have to be a lady to appreciate $3 martinis.
THURSDAYLunaBefore every other club revived '80s music, Luna was already kicking it. If we can hear Ministry, INXS and New Order in one night, we’re happy. Attire here is everything from denim to latex and people come to dance. It’s repeatedly awarded best alternative dance club by Real Detroit. Just when you’re getting too sweaty, the Luna Dancers give reason to clear the dance floor with their hot shows intermittingly all night long like the tribute to Janet Jackson on Thursday, August 13.
Philly FreezeIs finding a good party like “Finding a Needle in a Haystack?” Does it make you feel like you’re working on a “Chain Gang?” Well, fear not our soul loving friends, DJs Vanessa and Natalie are playing your favorite songs from The Velvelettes, Sam Cooke and Gino Washington every other Thursday at Slows Bar BQ. Like watching cute chicks get giggly every time they pick a record to play and then the records are actually good? Yeah, us too — we’ll see you there next Thursday.
FRIDAYBoscoHere’s how cool the Bosco is: the name means “forest” in Italian. It’s non-smoking inside and offers smokers a Brazilian wood/waterfall patio outside. Fridays are The Rotation, which showcases Detroit’s best DJs. “The Friday rotation has been a big hit because we’re bringing in a combination of well-established, top level DJs and rotating them with young, rising stars,” owner Dan Haberman said. “The musical styles are all a little bit different, but mesh well.”
Funk NightWhen DJs Frank Raines and Brad Hales walk into the room with their gear you can tell a couple of things are going to happen. A. Some good records are going to be thrown down. B. The building will come close to collapsing from all of the ass shaking. C. This is Funk Night. Winning the award of America’s Best Party from Papermag, this monthly has still not let up one bit.
SATURDAYKingdomWe love the recent touting of Kingdom: “If you remember Legends, Space and maybe even Zoo Bar, take a look at how we renovated the building.“ Yes we remember being underage and sneaking into Legends to see the pretty party people. Years later we kindof remember a lot of Jägermeister at Space and vodka-infused dancing at Zoo. And now at Kingdom, the bar seems more LA than Detroit. Kingdom blends posh designs with risqué elements including a dominatrix who will spank you on your birthday or if you’re just very, very bad.
SUNDAYTonicA lot of places claim that “anything can happen” on any given night of the week, but Tonic owner Marty Coats may be the only club owner in the Detroit area who can officially say and get away with it. With a forever rotating line-up of entertainment and promotions, Sunday nights at Tonic are insane. With a beautiful bevy of ladies in lingerie and swimsuits, no matter the theme of the night, this night the exclamation point of your week.
The Detroit EagleThe Detroit Eagle is a gay leather and fetish bar. Get over the pictures on the web site, you prude and head on down for Secret Sundays. The “secret” has nothing to do with your orientation, but rather that this is where all of the coolest kids go every week. Take advantage of the two-dollar specials and danceto the mix of disco, soul and new wave that has hipsters saying, “That’s hot” all over again. |
