Hot Brews
B. Nektar Meadery
For anyone who enjoys a delicious craft beer whether it is in the stranglehold heat of the summer or the slow moving days of the winter, slowly progressing toward the world of mead is a natural occurrence. Sure, you will chase down any number of microbrewed bliss around the country … but eventually, your taste buds evolve and crave something with a bit more flavor and thickness. Troy resident Ken Schramm experienced such a leap forward into the world of mead after discovering his passion for home brewing. “My older brother gave me a home brewing kit, and in the kit was a book called The Complete Joy of Home Brewing,” recalls Schramm. “There was an appendix in the back of the book that speaks about mead in just glowing terms.”
After purchasing a house with several fruit trees in the yard and teaming up with fellow home brewer Brad Dahlhofer to create the heavily applauded (and awarded) B. Nektar Meadery, Schramm set to work on cultivating his most delicious creation yet — The Heart Of Darkness. “What really matters is the high quality production of growing fruit,” explains Schramm. He treated his homegrown fruit in the very same fashion, handpicking and hand-pitting Morello cherries, fermenting them with other homegrown red raspberries, black currents and honey. |
