Gardens
Planting The Seed
While the Motor City crumbles around them, the members of Gardens are oblivious to the gloomy news and have embraced a positive mental attitude. Sure, vocalist/guitarist Jeffrey Thomas, bassist Vincent Mazzola and drummer Julian Spradlin play fine experimental post-punk meets garage, but the band has bigger plans set in sight for Detroit.
The boys are big dreamers. Between ideas to start a garden/restaurant/skate ramp near their Woodbridge household or plans for a musician's union, they have much they want to accomplish. On the music end, the group will celebrate the release of their first seven-inch on Italy Records in the coming weeks. Real Detroit talked with the group about the state of Gardens, both through sound and in food.
You guys have a kind of straightforward, lo-fi garage sound. Was that part of what you wanted to do, or is this the start of the experiment-ation process?Jeffrey Thomas: We like that stuff, but we also like other things, like trying to see what things we can fuse into it. Like, on top of that, be creative as much as possible while still expressing simple ideas in a package that is as interesting as can be.
Is there a line that you don’t want to cross of being too weird? Do you think the band will still sound like it does farther down the line?Vincent Mazzola: I think in a year it could sound completely different.
Julian Spradlin: I don’t think we’re opposed to it.
JT: Maybe not on the first album, which we will be working on next month, but on the next I can see it getting far out there. How far? I don’t know. How far? I mean, we aren’t going to mic bird sounds and be playing a plant. (laugh)
Is there a goal of the band? Do you want to do something more than music?VM: We’ve been talking about opening a farm/school/restaurant for a really long time in the field over there. That’s, like, our main goal.
JT: All the restaurants that want local food could come buy it there. We’d build our own restaurant and we’d include the school next door for programs. |
