Fort Street Gallery

In the midst of the gritty, industrial, southern edge of Corktown lies something unexpected — a massive art gallery space with pristine, panoramic views of the downtown skyline to the east, the Ambassador Bridge to the west and Windsor to the south. Located on the second floor of a historic former Hudson’s warehouse, the Fort Street Gallery plays host to multisensory exhibitions of fashion, art and music with a view that is second to none.

With 22,000-square-feet of exhibit space, including a bar and VIP area, Fort Street is a versatile location for events. Since opening in November 2009, the gallery has hosted several high-profile shows, including The Arrival — a grand opening show that combined art, music, comedy and fashion — and Primary Detroit — a joint production of CPop, still operating after leaving its former Midtown gallery, and Miami-based urban street art organization Primary Flight.

Curator Laura Deljanin is committed to bringing an innovative blend of media to Fort Street, as well as a combination of local and national talent. “I’ve brought in national clients and a passion of mine is supporting Detroit artists and designers, and we also do live music — anything from blues to jazz to DJs,” Deljanin says. Big names like Anthropologie and Paul Anthony have brought their fashions to Fort Street alongside local designers like Detroit Mechanix and Deljanin’s own Laurette Designs, which is launching a new clothing line at the gallery’s upcoming Shades of Green event on March 20. The show promises to put a sophisticated, high-fashion twist on the close of Corktown’s weeklong St. Patrick’s Day festivities.

“The spring fashion show is a whole correlation of art, music and fashion,” Deljanin explains. “It’s just a conglomeration of me producing art and fashion shows, always being the little kid from CCS and Henry Ford that wanted to do fashion. People are like, ‘Go to New York; go to L.A.,’ but my thing is, do it at home first, and then you’ve made it. Then you can show what a great town we come from.”  | RDW
