Catherine Fossati Healey launched Fossati Handbags just last year. Since then, Fossati’s “Venice” handbag has been worn by Mai-Ling Lofgren at the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards, praised by the snobbiest of bags snobs and even made its debut at Henri Bendel’s NY Flagship store. RDW sat down with the Michigan-born and based designer that specializes in exotic skins to discuss the power of python.
Exotics are a fashion staple. What skins do you work with?
I use flawless materials such as genuine alligator, ostrich, python and lizard, that are CITES registered, with soft Italian leather lining.
Where is Fossati manufactured?
All handbags are meticulously made at a small US atelier. Each handbag is discreetly branded and comes with a card of authenticity. Limited edition Fossatis are marked with a production number, and are limited to 100 per style, color and material combination.
Tell us about your Italian Collection.
The Italian collection reflects the romance and elegance of Italy. Each design in the collection is named after and inspired by a city in Italy. The Venice Evening bag is sexy and elegant. Like Venice it has many moods, from very formal to casual chic. Aqua waters, blue sky and a warm breeze of the Isle of Capri inspired the Capri shoulder bag. Luxurious but laidback.

Fossati’s Italian Collection brings beautiful neutrals of creams, browns and blacks that look stunning with any outfit. Details of these creations include a burst of shocking pink lambskin lining upon opening the magnetic snap closure, interior pockets for your cell phone and credit cards and a pretty sachet for safe keeping. My fave is the Natural Ring Lizard Venice handbag, a gorgeous classic with an amazing shape.
