Erin Go Bragh - Rah!
Detroit’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Cheer Squad Does The Parade
The Motor City Rah-Rahs aren’t your stereotypical tight sweater-sporting, schoolbook-toting, jock-dating gals. The eight fishnet-clad, Detroit-bred babes are, in fact, each above age 35, have ties to the local rock scene, and, with their pom-pons, mini skirts and fun-spirited attitude, the Rahs put the “ass” in “sassy.”
The Rah-Rahs were created in 2006 by Julie Hecker of Punk Fitness Detroit to be the official cheerleading squad for the Detroit Derby Girls. All active Punk Fitness members, they cheer on the skaters, perform choreographed dance routines during intermissions and hype up the crowd by bringing the fans onto the floor to hula hoop and other activities. Hecker handpicked a crew and they’ve since cheered alongside an array of Detroit festivities, from former Detroit Mayor Ken Cockrel’s election night party and the Detroit Free Press’ 2009 marathon to notorious raunch-rocker Peaches’ most recent Detroit show, as well as local rock bands from The Hentchmen to The Romantics.
“We’re like an all-female band of cougars, only we don’t have to do anything but be fabulous, sassy and sexy!” says Karen “Queen Bee” Neal, team member and blond rah-rah rocker chic in band TH3YN3V3RSL33P. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to represent such a fierce institution of Detroit.”
Through regular performances at shows and Detroit-centric events, Neal says The Motor City Rah-Rahs aim to empower the people of Detroit and celebrate the guts, goodwill and talent that make this city worth fighting for. “We’re shakin’ our asses for you, Detroit! Shake it with us!” she encourages.
The squad is slated to shake up the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Corktown. What do the gals have planned? “We’ll proudly represent PJ’s Lager House along with the Motor City Assembly Line Marching Band. The rest is under wraps. You never know what we’ve got up our sleeves ... or under our skirts, for that matter. You’ll just have to come see for yourselves!” |
