Your Neighbors Rock

If last year's Detroit Music Awards was any indication of the fun level possible at an award show, than take heed in its foreshadowing of this year's event and prepare for an absolute frenzy. Highlights from last year's event included The Hard Lessons meeting Bob Seger, The Go exploding on stage with their excellent psych rock and some fun with everyone’s favorite clown band, Insane Clown Posse. So, what’s to come this year? What will be the highlight of '08? Everything.

There is no slack this year in the way of magnificent musical performers. Detroit countryman Dave Feeney rustles together his team of alt-country geniuses, American Mars, while Crud brings the flash and dash of the Sunset Boulevards to the stage of The Fillmore. In terms of ear and eye candy, the Scott Gwinnell Jazz Orchestra will be performing with the always lovely Jesse Palter. But perhaps the most anticipated performance of the night comes from The Muggs who will be performing selections from their new record, due out in May.

In terms of nominees, the DMAs, as always, have once again selected the best and brightest hitmakers the Motor City has to offer. In the battle of the titans that is the Outstanding Electronic/Dance DJ category, DJ Godfather, DJ House Shoes, DJ Linda Lexy, Kevin Saunderson and Mike Clarke fight it out in an ultimate DJ battle royale, worthy of the WWE. Another local category that is being widely debated is the Outstanding Alternative/Indie Artist/Group award. Garage rock heavyweights like The Dirtbombs and Gore Gore Girls are pitted against experimental indie talent The Silent Years and the rock-fusion-jam band Bump. The big award for the night, Outstanding National Single, features nominees ranging from the soul of Aretha Franklin and rock of Kid Rock to the mutant blues of The White Stripes and punk of The Stooges. Who will win? You're just gonna have to come out and see for yourself ...

This year, in addition to awarding current artists, the DMAs will present Distinguished Achievement Awards to three extremely worthy honorees. Dave Siglin, the long-time program director of The Ark, will be honored for his 40 years of service to the Ann Arbor acoustic folk venue. Also being given the award will be The Roostertail and blues musician Uncle Jessie White. The famous Detroit musician was regarded as an elder statesman and troubadour of the blues scene until his untimely death earlier this year.

Hosting all of the festivities for the second year in a row is M.C. Serch. The Third Base rapper, who hosted Ego Trip’s White Rapper Show and can now be seen on  VH1's Ms. Rap Supreme will provide the laughs and perform MC duties.

If you're in a band that wasn't nominated or are just a casual fan of Detroit music, this year's DMAs will be a spectacle for both industry insiders and all die-hard fans of music. With ticket prices ranging from $20 to $25, this is your chance to check out the feel of an award show without all the Hollywood pretension that taints The Academy Awards and The Grammys.

Make it out to the DMAs and recognize the brilliant talent that walks the streets of Detroit every day.  | RDW
