Washboard Games
'Twas a night-o-flaming washboards at the Magic Bag on Thursday. Big Damn Band guitarist and lead vocalist Rev. Peyton was a little under the weather, but that didn’t stop the band from bringing down the house. The Rev apologized profusely for being sick and gave a demonstration of his magic bass-playing thumb as payback, playing “Yankee Doodle” and “Dixie” at the same time — same hand. The fam-damnily hooted and hollered their way through a killer set that culminated with washboard powerhouse Breezy Peyton setting fire to her instrument Hendrix-style.
OMG! There He Is!Friday night was a homecoming for Detroit’s own R&B star K’Jon, who kicked it with fans during an exclusive meet and greet at the Garden Court Condominiums, which is also where he shot many scenes for his “On Everything” music video. The area was buzzing with anticipation before his arrival. “The fans are the people who made me. Anytime I come back to Detroit in front of my fans, that’s wonderful. I love it,” he told us. He gave out hugs, posed for pics and signed autographs. To make the gig even better, fans that donated a canned good or clothes to benefit the Salvation Army got a K'Jon CD for free.
Motor City MagicAlso on Friday, D-Days enjoyed the second annual “Jammin’ For Joseph” event, hosted by Fox 2 Sports Director Dan Miller, at the Fillmore. Two years ago, seven-year-old Joseph Penrod was diagnosed with DMD (Duechenne Muscular Dystrophy), a disease that causes rapid muscular degeneration. Joseph’s mother, Marissa Penrod, along with Michigan hip-hop mainstay Hush, got a group of Detroit’s finest musicians to put on an amazing event to raise funds for Joseph’s treatment and for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The all-ages crowd had a blast watching acts like Hot Sauce and The Gun Line Band rock the stage. They also learned firsthand how to be an MC with lessons courtesy of Quest McCody and Brilliance. Songstress Monica Blaire had the kids eating out of her hands with a performance including candy, bubbles and “Apache” dance lessons. Highlights included: Brilliance giving Joseph an autographed Red Wings jersey, and Ro Spit handing off a limited edition Burn Rubber hat. The whole night just warmed our hearts.
Royale With No CheeseLast week marked the final Passport Tuesday, the Bosco’s longest-running weekly event DJ'd by D-Days fave Brian Gillespie. The latest addition, called “Twosdays,” have DJ Erv on the decks (formerly of Fancy/Barely Legal Wednesdays) and offer up $2 well drinks and High Life bottles. “The people have been asking for a bottom dollar night,” Bosco proprietor Dan Haberman told us Saturday evening while we sipped one of our fave signature Bosco drinks — the Banana Bar. Yes! Twosdays mean broke people like us can drink more than Burnett’s vodka out of a brown paper bag. Haberman's also added “Lounge Royale” Wednesdays to the roster, complete with a two-piece live band — The Crowned Heads of Rhythm (Pistol Pete and George Friend of the Twistin’ Tarantulas) to play lounge covers of retro hits along with $5 menu cocktails. Hell yes!
Floggin' Good TimesD-Days was feeling rather Irish on Saturday at the Fillmore with Flogging Molly, where the Guinness flowed like water and the crowd resembled a green and black sea. Detroit’s own Silent Years opened up, along with the Architects from Kansas City. Flogging Molly worked the crowd into a dancing frenzy and we can’t think of a better way to prep for St. Patty’s Day than to go see some in-your-face Irish music and drink draft beer.
