Return of the Mac
Based on the long line of ladies hovering in front of Ferndale’s Magic Bag on Tuesday, one may have guessed Fabio himself was the new shirtless door guy. Nay. It was former New Kid on the Block, baby blue-eyed Joey McIntyre, promoting his new quasi-electronica (yeah) solo album titled Here We Go Again. The damn-near sold-out show was filled with female fans that mainstream America might currently peg as “cougars.” Since we dislike the tacky term, we’ll call them hot middle-aged women (you can also see this phrase in the 2010 “Best of Detroit” ballot on RealDetroitWeekly.com). Cute Bag staffer, Caira Rae Castelli, accomplished one of our lifetime goals that evening. Aside from meeting Joey himself, she got onto his tour bus and he, yes, signed her vintage Joey McIntyre doll she may or may not have lusted over as a tween. Photo evidence suggests that the “Joey doll” got pretty loose Tuesday night for a
post-party at the Bosco. Was that him standing on the bar chugging whiskey shots and guzzling High Lifes while holding a smoke? You be the judge.
Hidden GemsDetroit got a glimpse of Motor City movie-making at its best when Janaya Black unveiled ‘Til Death Do Us Part at the Java Exchange downtown Friday evening. This involving, intriguing and sinister glimpse of matrimony colliding with murder is not only an impressive effort, it’s also (and we hasten to add that this is merely our conjecture) a subtle allegory about a former mayor’s
disastrous collision with his own unbridled hubris. Keep an eye out for this one at
future screenings.
San Francisco Treat
Even at 11 p.m. (what? that’s early), Vain was packed with an eager crowd all jazzed up another for SpinDetroit event with San Francisco’s prodigal son Mark Farina. DJs Shane LaChappelle and Hugh C kicked off the night in grand style with punchy organic beats. Up in the VIP, DDays flirted with our favorite party girls Azra, Mia and Anida to catch up on the latest boy adventures and share the Goose. With rumors swirling about a missed flight, Mark Farina graced the DJ booth late in the night to a blissful dance floor ready for major grindin’ and groovin.’ After the lights came on, we chilled to Mr. Mushroom Jazz for another three hours at the after party, and then onto breakfast. We can’t even imagine a better start to the weekend. Watch out for a killer live set from The Crystal Method at Vain on Jan 30.
Eye On ElzhiIf you haven’t had a chance to pick up a copy of Elzhi’s latest mix tape, The Leftovers, good luck finding furniture for the rock you’ve been living under. DDays on Saturday got a sneak peek of the set on the first day of shooting for Elzhi’s new video “Deep,” directed by Gerard Victor Atillo. If you don’t know Atillo, get hip — as he’s an emerging video director responsible for Ro Spit’s “Renaissance State of Mind” video featuring Monica Blaire. Atillo has a talent-heavy team in line for this, including Detroit’s well-known videographer Nic Notion (photographer for Big Sean and Mike Posner, Dante Marshall). We took a look at the video treatment and, well, we’re not spoilers over here but we saw everything from a grimy, abandoned elementary school to a sparkling rooftop view of the inspiring Detroit skyline. DDays will keep you posted about the shoot. Rumor has it cameos include Detroit hip-hop heavyweights Phat Kat, DJ Dez, Black Milk and Slum Village counterpart T3. Raise it up!
Jugga-what? Jugga-who? It’s not everyday that red carpet movie premiers happen in Detroit, but leave it to the Insane Clown Posse for the big release of Big Money Rustlas on Saturday. Juggalos eagerly awaited entry at the Fillmore to see a decade of chatter come to life on the silver screen. Naturally, the Psychopathic (Records) family donned their trademark face paint but classed it up by throwing in ties and stuff. We especially dug ABK’s pink cravat. “Players wear pink!” he says. The movie was hilarious and the juggalos were pleased. We just can’t wait to see what else the clowns have up their sleeves. |
