Bosco and Magic Bag Owners Free Their Bars From Smoke

“If I’m going to get cancer it should be from my own smoke, not someone else’s,” is the chatter Real Detroit Weekly has heard from many bartenders and bar patrons.

Secondhand smoke kills and we know it. The Haberman brothers, who own both the Bosco and Magic Bag in Ferndale, know it too. They love their bartenders and they love you, their customers. So, put that all together and the result is that siblings Jeremy and Daniel have decided to take the giant leap into modern times and declare their clubs the first smoke-free in Michigan. Before you flip out and list the Black Lotus as doing it first, know that we’re talking lounges and nightclubs — not food establishments. (One love, Lotus, we adore you too).

Independence Day is the kick-off at both venues, and how appropriate as they celebrate freedom from smoke. The Habermans ask that anyone who has craved smoke-free bar air to celebrate with them throughout the weekend. Yet, before you gasp (or cough) at the idea of no longer chilling with a beer and cig, know this; the Haberman boys are providing heated outdoor smoking areas just like the bars abroad in France, Italy, Ireland and New Zealand and stateside in New York, California, New Jersey, Arizona and “even North Carolina,” said Bosco owner Daniel Haberman. “This is our state and we want it to do well,” he added. “Lansing has messed up so many times on this ... We don’t want to be the last of the smoking states, with all due respect, like Alabama or Mississippi, [states] that comedians joke on.” Even staunch smokers are giddy their clothing won’t smell like dirty ashtrays from everyone else’s cigarettes, the brothers have said.

“We want smokers to feel comfortable and we want clean air for everyone,” said Jeremy Haberman, who heads the Magic Bag. If you’re worried about missing part of the flick during Brew & View, there’s time to light up outside during intermission. The Bag and Bosco have held outdoor-only-smoking test runs on Sundays and Mondays and its response has been almost universally positive. “We’ve had one negative email out of 100 in less than a week,” Jeremy Haberman said. “Everyday we’re getting emails saying, 'Yes! Finally!'" Even the president of St. John’s Hospital sent a thank you note.

At the end of each night, bar employees will sweep the concrete on Woodward, as they always do anyway, picking up the expected increased cigarette butts from those who think the world is their trashcan. “It’s better than getting cancer,” Daniel Haberman said. “As long as smokers are given a reasonable place to still smoke, people are supporting it.”

Just imagine, you can go out during the week and party, pass out in your smokeless scented clothing, stumble out of bed the next morning and crawl into work without even changing your shirt. Your boss will never know what you did the night before.  | RDW
