American Tresspassers

Five Finger Death Punch

Five Finger Death Punch is a band that packs tight guitar riffs, fiery drums, intense lyrics and vocals into a fine tuned metal machine. The band hails from Las Vegas, the city of sin, seduction and visual stimulation. They are currently headlining the Trespass America Tour that will take over Meadow Brook Music Festival on 8/4. The heavy hitters that make up the 5FDP outfit are vocalist Ivan Moody, guitartists Jason Hook and Zoltan Bathory, bassist Chris Kael and drummer Jeremy Spencer. Spencer took some time out of his busy schedule to chat with us here at RDW.

How's the tour going so far?

We pretty much have most of the kinks worked out, which is nice and everyone seems to be getting along really good. The shows have been a lot of fun so I would have to say it's going well.

Have you always played in metal bands? Have you been other types of bands?

Yeah, I've been in all different types of genres, but metal has always been my real passion. As far as drumming, it's great because I get to almost play a drum solo on every song. I get to be busy so it's a lot of fun.

Have you ever played any other instruments besides the drums?

Yeah, I've horribly played guitar and I played piano for a few years.

What lead you to your career path as a musician?

When I was very young and I first heard the band KISS, I got one of their records and I was just so enthralled by the record covers and the sound. I was like, man that looks exciting. And then my grandma bought me a little Sears drum kit that I started banging away on. So then I felt and pretended to be like I was in KISS, I thought I was Peter Criss. I was really into it and from then on I've always been into it.

That's a pretty cool gift from your Grandma.

I remember one time me and my friend dressed up like KISS and were performing for the neighborhood kids and my grandma was there. At the end of the performance I threw out a drumstick into the crowd and hit her right in the head. Not a very cool way to pay back the lady who got you your first set of drums.

What is your favorite thing about being on tour and what is your least favorite?

My favorite thing is getting to be a part of these huge shows, the audience is growing and growing every tour and the production is getting bigger and bigger. It's a lot of fun. I don't like being away from my dogs, also sitting around doing a lot of nothing all day. I mean we do interviews like we're doing now but there's a lot of downtime where you just get really bored, that wears you out. But there's not much to complain about it's a pretty cool job.

You guys are big supporters of the military; does anyone in the band have family in the service?

Zoltan came from a military family and Ivan as well. There's some ties there for sure, we like going over there and playing for the troops when we can. They don't get a lot of entertainment so when we can go and play for them it's usually a great positive experience. They're really grateful and we're really grateful for them since they sacrifice so much. | RDW
