The Electorate by Adriel
Cedric Gervais' career is the envy of many, many artists. His first gig, in his homeland of France, was a 3,000-person rave. He was only 15. Shortly after, he began a residency at Paris’ infamous Queen club. What seems like moments later, Gervais landed at Miami’s Crobar. In 2004, his current residency started at Miami’s Space. During his reign, Gervais has played with some of the top electronic music artists in the world: Deep Dish, Roger Sanchez and Sander Kleinenberg have grooved alongside him late into the night.
It was at one of these sessions that rocker Lenny Kravitz tapped him to remix three of his songs. His production skills, along with sometime partner Dallas Austin, have led to additional work with Second Sun, Duran Duran and Dirty Vegas. His own production work includes his first release, "Burning" (Ultra Records), which made a huge mark and led the top label to request a two-album deal. His debut album, Experiment, came out this summer. The first single, "Spirit Of My Life," released in April, is already in rotation in the sets of Erick Morillo, Seb Fontaine, Deep Dish and many other major DJs. You can experience Cedric Gervais, the king of Miami, this Saturday at Bleu. | RDW

When you think of MCs in this city that should have a deal, Miz Korona’s name should be at the top of the list. Not only has she been featured on major records, but she laid down the memorable freestyle against Xzibit in 8 Mile. Korona is the perfect person to put the female rapper stereotype to rest. “Around my tenth birthday, my mom got me a record player and Two 12”s: Run DMC and JJ Fad. I fell in love with hip-hop that day," Korona says.
Miz Korona feels as if it has taken her whole life to finally get to a point where she’s ready to drop an official album. “I needed more direction, as far as songwriting and production. I also had to learn more about the business,” she says about the album’s hold-up. In 2009, she will release The Injection and Dope Muzik, both produced by Chanes.
See Miz Korona November 14th at PJ’s Lager House along with Chief, Danny Brown, Illite, Abrasive Method, LoDown and P-Dog, hosted by The Zone. More: myspace.com/1mizkorona. | RDW

One full year of PJ’s management of the Lager House (sidenote: also, one year of Deep Cutz columns) and part of their birthday celebration features a refreshing, acoustic show put together by JRC from Five Three Dial Tone (.com). Detroit Unplugged assembles Alicia & Matt (The Nice Device), John Nelson (New Grenada/Copper Thieves), Craig Brown (Terrible Twos/Mahonies), Dale & Jenna (Four Hour Friends) and also features Blair (Blair & The Boyfriends), an award-winning urban folk/afro-punk, singer/songwriter and national slam poetry champion whose work has been performed worldwide. More info: myspace.com/blairmusic.
Also, Zach Curd (Pop Project/Suburban Sprawl, myspace.com/zachcurdmusic) brings his flavorful solo soul pop. “I know a lot of people say that they start solo projects to work on ideas that can’t fit into the strict, horrible and suffocating confines of their regular band,” said Curd, “but for me, it is something less finite and more of a continuation of the practice of songwriting and recording … probably because the Pop Project is as comfortable playing disco as it is playing country.” (P.S. Despite whoever won the election, remember, we’re all in this together, don’t worry ‘bout the government.) | RDW
Motor City’s Burning by Eric Allen | photo by Andrea Bonaventura
Though I might be beyond my best skating days, that doesn’t mean I can't still appreciate skate rock. That bastard cousin of punk rock has provided us with fantastic bands like Gang Green, Bones Brigade and U.S. Bombs and always gives us something to skate to. Despite the skating season drying up, The Belmont is hosting a night full of skate rock for your pleasure on November 15.
Kicking things off are the 3 Chord Lords from Taylor who do things very similar to the Circle Jerks. In fact, the vocals sound just like Keith Morris. They do it fast, short and loud. Also from the Downriver way comes the second band of the night, Aggro or Die. Slightly more bass heavy and hardcore sounding, AOD is the band I want to play on the edge of an empty pool as I come around into a perfect frontside grind. Ending things at The Belmont show are the always fun Best Idea Ever! (pictured). Get out to this show. Motor City’s Burning favorites, The Red Shift, performed their last show this past weekend. I just wanted say, “good luck” to Scotty, who is moving out of state, and to Marky and Jerry on their next endeavor. Thanks for everything. | RDW
