Five Finger Death Punch True Metal At Its Finest
Apeek into this fine-tuned metal machine with bassist Matt Snell:
First off, where did the name Five Finger Death Punch come from? The name comes from a move used in the movie Kill Bill Vol. 2. This was the only choice; there were no other names considered.
What is one of the most unusual places that you’ve played a show or recorded at? I’m not sure if there’s a specific place, but every show in Texas was weird.
You’re really into tuning cars, drag racing, etc. When you’re not on the road do you have multiple car projects going on? Is there any in particular that’s been your favorite? Currently all my projects are finished, but if I do have time when we’re not touring I’ll most likely start a new one. My favorite project I’ve done would be my '72 Regency.
Who are some of the more under the radar metal bands that have impressed you? I’d say Opeth, also a band called Soilwork who are from Europe. They’re great; they really don’t get the recognition they deserve. I’d like to figure out how we could bring them on tour with us in the future. I’m also really into Exodus, their recent albums are still great, although I don’t think they’ve gotten the industry push that they’ve needed for their more recent work.
How do you think that you’ve evolved as a band since your debut album The Way of the Fist to your new release War is the Answer? The first album was a bit more melodic. In the second, which is a bit harder, we focused more on the guitar melodies and solos. We also had the addition of Jason Hook, which brings new technique and ideas to the band. The new album is a step forward but we’re definitely not leaving the old album behind. Also being out on tour with Korn, Disturbed, Slipknot and others has definitely influenced our music. You learn a lot from other musicians from their different musical styles and way that they play their instruments.
Do you have any advice that you would give to fans that are looking to become successful musicians? There are a lot of good bands out there that never land because they give up. Be too stupid to quit. | RDW
