Invasion of the … Commies, Trekkies, Scientologists?
Commies are invading the Metro Detroit area … or maybe it’s terrorists. It’s unclear who the enemy is. But if you happen to be in the Harper Woods area this coming week, you might be able to spot them — and report back to us who you see! Filming begins on the anticipated remake of Red Dawn, the 1984 cult classic about Soviet forces taking over the U.S. and subverting all our cherished American values.

The original starred Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howell and Lea Thompson. Director Dan Bradley is using lots of local talent for the new film (and Tom Cruise’s son, Connor; plus the young Captain Kirk Chris Hemsworth), so DDays will keep you up to date on the attack.

Fabulous Ferndale Flips Cinematic
On Thursday night, Dino’s welcomed the opening ceremonies for the Ferndale Film Festival with clips of local filmmakers' submissions and a bunch of flowing drinks. Obviously, Dino’s is kind of a prime spot for such a showing — the cluttered décor yet open design makes for a pretty spiffy drunken viewing. DDays caught up with one young director, Jim McLuckie, whose short Rob Gets Dumped was being shown.

“It’s about a robot named Rob getting dumped by human girls,” says McLuckie … OK, we’re listening. “I thought getting involved with the Ferndale Film Festival would be a great opportunity to get something out there and support the city.”

We’re sold. DDays will keep you posted on what awards / acknowledgements McLuckie picks up in our next issue.

Past the Troubled Waters
Jacoby’s Bar in Detroit has been open since 1904 and has consistently given a lot of love to Detroit musicians, many bands having gotten their start there. Recently, Jacoby’s kitchen had to close when a fresh water line upstairs leaked overnight and by morning flooded the lower level. But the bar itself is still open, and General Manager Monica Boynton is still feeding people — ordering pizza for customers on regular nights. And wait until you see what they have planned during Lions games.

“We hope to have the kitchen open by the end of September, but you can imagine the red tape with insurance,” Boynton said. Closing a kitchen is serious. It means no work for employees, so go support the oldest bar in the Detroit. It's an institution.

Cleaning Out the Kitchen Sink
Wednesday nights have become a growing phenomenon at Goodnite Gracie in downtown Royal Oak. This past Wednesday night was popping given the presence of Chicago DJ Raj Mahal on the ones and twos. Edward Miller was showing off his gnome obsession through his visual pop art scattered about the walls, with Paul Randolph, Chris de Luca (CLP), John Arnold and David Cermak coming through to check out the scene.

The Finest of Festivals
The inaugural Mt. Clemens Music Fest kicks off on Thursday, September 17 at the Emerald Theatre with a music symposium.

Bands are encouraged to bring their bios, press kits and recordings to distribute to recording execs, producers and industry insiders. Don’t have a press kit yet? No problem. Panelists will be discussing everything from band essentials to touring and recording. The conference begins at 7 p.m. with live musical performances beginning at 8:30 p.m.

Mt. Clemens Music Fest producer Mike Mitchell's goal is to “provide a networking opportunity for bands and artists with industry professionals.” Local legends Sponge and Hush will be closing out the party. For the rest of the details, check out next week’s issue of Real Detroit!  | RDW
