Detroit Urban Craft Fair

Now in its third year, the Detroit Urban Craft Fair has become a hugely popular hit among Michiganders — so big that they had to move venues. The organization behind this artistic mesh of the minds is Handmade Detroit and they've got the goods to make this an event you won’t want to miss. The new spot that will house the DUCF is the Fillmore, and some of the advantages to this change are that it will be able to hold more vendors, more people and more good times. “[It’s] pretty exciting,” said Handmade Detroit's Lish Dorset. “It’s such a cool venue and is such a great part of Detroit’s history.”
With over 60 vendors, the DUCF is going to be the biggest and most diverse it’s ever been. “We really made sure this time around that we had a really big variety,” Dorset said. “So that it’s not just all jewelry and purses. There’s definitely something for everybody.” Aside from walking around the Fillmore and checking out some of Detroit’s creative geniuses, you can expect to see some out-of-towners setting up shop as well. “We’ve got vendors coming in from Canada, from all across the Midwest, and actually all across the country,” said an enthusiastic Dorset. “It’s really neat!”
One DUCF highlight is a fashion show put on by Cement Detroit's Adrienne Goloda that promises to be a unique and ingenious affair. The show, A Bag: A Dress, is all about designers making a dress out of random clothes picked by someone else and served to them in a grocery bag. “All of the dresses will be on display during the day,” Dorset said. “And towards the end of the evening, they will all be up onstage and people can vote on the winner.”
The Detroit Evolution Lab (did you read City Beat yet?) will be serving all kinds of vegan specialties. “They will be there all day long cooking and selling food — anything from snacks to actual meals,” Dorset said. “[Also], they will be providing food that is locally grown and healthy, [as well as] promoting an alternative lifestyle.” After eating some of the D.E.L.'s delicious and healthy grub, don’t forget that you are inside of a concert venue and there are in fact two bars readily available for your pleasure.
With the significant increase in the amount of vendors, the DUCF will have a more distinctive feel, partially due to Handmade Detroit’s mindset when selecting the vendors. “We are always looking for something really unique, something really different that we haven’t seen before,” Dorset said. “We try to have a good variety.” This year, the DUCF is bigger, stronger and is certain to be more artistic and original than ever before, so come on Detroit … get your arts and crafts on! | RDW
