Deep Cutz Charlie

Searching for the hot tips on the Detroit music scene? Look no further than the fast rising DeepCutz blog. Beginning as a weekly column in your very own Real Detroit, DeepCutz Charlie felt constrained by the looming word counts associated with press releases and decided to reach into his mind of music and start his own blog. “I figured, if I couldn’t get a job with Pitchfork Media, I might as well start my own Pitchfork,” Charlie said.

Launching in February of 2008, Charlie’s first post was a quick rant about what music means to this new generation of blogs and listeners. He also stated in his first post that he “won’t be updating regularly.” Since then, Deepcutz Charlie has touched on everything and everyone from The Death Set to Rock City Fest to events such as MOCAD GOLD. He has even noted on subjects such as the extinction of Record Time in Ferndale (R.I.P.) and the raid on the C.A.I.D.

Thanks to his ever-expanding mind for music and knack for the English language, Deep Cutz Charlie does update Deep Cutz on a regular basis, taking a hard honest look at the bands he covers. There is no stone left unturned when it comes to the pieces featured. “DeepCutz started because I was always writing longer versions of my articles anyway, I would get so zealous in my interviews that I would sit with the bands for hours and get them to spill their lives to me. And to try and constrict that to a 300-word space ... I wanted to do more for the bands, to tell the whole story.” Charlie sites Deep Cutz as “uncut versions of the Real Detroit work.” Thankfully, if you read an article in RDW by the Charlie, and find yourself wanting more out of it, it’s a safe bet to drop by DeepCutz and see if it's been done. “Any day you go onto a blog, you’ll see from those who comment, at times tearing the city apart and the artists within the city apart. You have to stand up for those bands, and that’s what I’ve been trying to do with some of my posts,” Charlie noted. DeepCutz is the outlet Detroit needs due to its constant barrage of negative attention; DeepCutz is fighting back with words and highlighting the beauty of Detroit music, art and culture.
