Rev Theory Vroom!
You probably thought grunge died when Courtney Love went mainstream ... you would've been right … grunge was pretty much dead. Although things have been quiet in the grunge scene for years, there is one band with their feet planted on the front lines of its revival. The fist-pumping band Rev Theory are bringing grunge back to the masses.
The boys of Rev Theory are true road warriors playing an average of 250 shows a year. “Well, we don’t really have permanent homes,” singer Rich Luzzi says. “We’re on the road all the time. We’ve been on the road for the last three years.” Their new album Light it Up shows undeniable maturity from their first release. “It’s just an automatic growth,” Luzzi says. “We don’t want to write the same record twice or anything.”
After scoring boss opening slots for bands like Saliva and Papa Roach, living out of a suitcase and probably surviving on Ramen noodles, all the blood and sweat Rev Theory leave on the stage after each performance is finally starting to pay off.
The title track off their latest release was chosen as the Wrestlemania 24 theme song and Rev Theory was chosen to perform live at Wrestlemania at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida in March. “Light it Up” has also been chosen as something of an anthem for wrestling television shows Smackdown and Raw. More recently, lead single "Hell Yeah" is receiving major radio attention and has already proven to be a notable summer party song.
In this day and age, up-and-coming bands feel pressure to put on a more entertaining live show in order to draw fans away from their computers which hold their CD (which was more than likely downloaded for free). Rev Theory feels no pressure. “We don’t feel like we have to play harder to convince people to come see us. We always play hard no matter what. That’s just our nature,” says Luzzi. “We play the same way to five people that we would to 500 people.”
This summer is Rev Theory’s time to shine by bringing that party-grunge sound back from the dead and into your earholes and so far they’re doing a damn good job. | RDW
