Chainsaws & Dancing-Shoes Zombie Dance Party
I think everybody needs to be Zombi-fied.It would be a therapeutic experience for the six-year-old inside us all who used to be afraid of the boogeyman and the basement. It’s the most appropriate Halloween costume after all, once you embrace the true Night of the Living Dead ethos, much classier and much more traditional than sexy maid, sexy teacher, Jesus-cowboy, Jesus-Rambo or sexy Jesus.
Carey Gustafson, drummer for pop trio Serenity Court and master-crafter behind Glass Action, believes in the romantic tragedy that horror films and overall spooky culture used to represent: catharsis for true outsiders.
This is the 4th annual Zombie Dance Party, put on by Carey, teamed (again) with Scotty Hagen from Bellyache Candy Shoppe (and record label) and it’s essentially a costume party, one invested in the more classical preferences of zombie culture.
Planning for “4” actually began before “3” because it entailed not only the release of Bellyache Records' Ghoul’s Delight (a 2-disc 31-song collection of local bands and their original Halloween-themed compositions, including The Hentchmen, The Pizazz, Dutch Pink, The Koffin Kats, Troy Gregory and the Stepsisters and more), but also a pre-party formal, a monster-catered dinner at the Magic Stick. For $35, you get dinner, a swag-bag, Ghoul’s Delight and a special secret performance. “I just stuck to it,” says Carey of ZDP. “I had the funniest monster fantasy and could coerce all my buddies to show up — if they like it, there’s a lot more weirdoes out there than even I know, so let’s get it bigger!”
This year’s feature includes the Zombinator: “Go in there alive and come out corroded,” says Carey.
Scotty (from The Grand Nationals and who performs with The Bubble Gum Hearts on Ghoul’s) sells nostalgic, rare candy brands online, but also, gloriously releases records (The Decks, The Go, Lee Marvin Computer Arm). There are also plans to feature band-themed candy bars: The Muldoon’s “Rocket Bar,” for example.
Players this year include Snakeout, Troy Gregory and the Stepsisters, the Hentchmen, The Dead Bodies, The 3-D Invisibles and the Dewtons:
If you could zombify anyone from history back into quasi-existence to share a dance with, whom would it be and why? Creepy Rick (3-D.I.): Mary Shelley, she’d probably dig being a zombie. Or Marilyn Monroe — come on — even as a zombie she’d be hot. The Dead Bodies: I would bring back Elvis, so when he shakes his hips, his dick would fall off …
More apt to dance with zombies or slay them? Jeff Dewton: I will leave the slaying to Dr. Peter Venkman and crew. Until the zombies get taken out with Proton Packs, I say, “Let’s Dance!!!” I’ve seen Scooby Doo. I know they can dance! The Dead Bodies: I’d snack on a zombie and dance with its private parts. Creepy Rick: I would dance, but I would probably be throwing out some Ash one-liners while I was doing it.
Would Zombies dig your style? JD: I gotta believe that my views on the NRA and gun control have gotta be a likeable quality for the zombies ... TDB: Duh!
Why? TDB: Fabulous. | RDW
