The fellas of Dutch Pink are at it again. Set to release their new record, an EP of songs based on famous writers’ sonnets entitled Six Little Songs Of Ourselves, DP are stepping up the promotion game just like we’ve come to expect from the Detroit-based band. The Tom Waits-ian trio will do an all-day “bus tour” mixing live performances, barbequing, a little bit of exercise (aka walking between two of the six total venues involved) and six other bands performing along with the men of the … hours.
Your very long (and entertaining) October 13 begins at 11 a.m. in the Woodward Avenue Brewers parking lot. There will be a little pre-partying (one imagines) and then the party will cruise over to the Old Miami for Oscillating Fan Club at 12:15 p.m. and DP at 1:15. Then it’s on to the Northern Lights Lounge at 2 for a 2:30 Jeremiah Bazely performance, followed — surprise! — by DP at 3:30.
The day continues on to Ether Aura and DP at The Belmont, then The Makebelieves (Athens, Ohio) and DP at the New Dodge, a walk next door to see Wingman and DP at the Painted Lady and then Duende! and DP back at the WAB. Whew! More info: myspace.com/withagainst | RDW

Motown is back and Nick Speed is a big reason why! Speed started out as a DJ, rhyming with his high school classmates, Magestic Legend and Elzhi, to form 9-2-5- Colony. Then, prices got too ridiculous to pay for beats. “I saw that for the price of two beats I could afford a beat machine. Instead of searching for what I wanted, I learned how to make it myself and developed my own formulas,” Speed said. He got an MPC 2000 XL and sampled records. “Now I use MPC with the Roland Fantom and ProTools, a very simple setup. My mind is the real secret weapon.”
DJ Houseshoes showed Nick the basics of producing. Since then, he has made tracks for artists such as 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Phat Kat, Proof and Talib Kweli. In house, he works with Danny Brown, 87, Big Herk and others. Speed signed to G-Unit Records as an in-house producer and as an artist he rhymes and produces for his record label, Libido Sounds. Look for Nick’s productions on his new two-disc CD, D-Tour. More info: myspace.com/nickspeed313. | RDW

“Our music involves a tight formation between fast tremolo, slick solos, flesh-tearing vocals, melodic bridges and breakdowns designed to get a crowd moving. Our aim is to write songs that almost tell a story with their sound and organization,” said Nick from Fatal Afaire, another of Waterford’s finest (and scarce) musical talents.
This job is great; I get to pretty much connect with everybody cool — it also gives me the hope that even people from a town that is pants (plain) as hell can break into the music scene. “I think we have been successful in that every song tells a story, or conveys a certain emotion. We make music to move people emotionally, and move a crowd physically,” said Nick.
Not to muddle “genres,” but I think the whole storytelling aspect of music has gone to shit. These days, it’s always about a girl: how she hates you or is hot as fuck or keyed your car — bullshit that we’ve all had happen, stories as generic as our own lives.
“We’re playing a massive metal/hardcore festival on November 16 at the Hartland Performing Arts Center with TONS of great bands. And we’re doing our annual Hell-0-ween show at the end of October,” said Nick. If your favorite holiday isn’t Halloween, you suck and should avoid this show at all costs. | RDW

Who doesn’t want to feel loved, or even liked for that matter? Just line up at We Like You Humans 5 this Saturday and they will make you think they like you. “Chris Deluca and Phon.o are hot right now,” said Kero, a.k.a. Sohail Azad of Det.Und. "Eurocrunk! CLP have been rocking clubs and festivals all over Europe with their ass-kicking sets as Chris de Luca vs. Phon.o. This unconventional combination of intergalactic hip-hop, ghetto beats, sexy booty IDM and dirty techno goes beyond typical contemporary genre boundaries, said Kero.” Plus Kero and John Hudson will visually stimulate you throughout the evening. “John is the official Det.Und VJ these days. There are plans about some interactive displays as well,” he said. Det.Und’s labor of love expands beyond this show. “We have a new experimental Web site, detund.com,” Kero said. “There is a new graphic design book coming out called NBmodul published by Die Gestalten Verlag. There is an eight-page-spread featuring the Det.Und album cover and typography,” he said.
“WLYH5 is a dedication to a lost friend Beau Gangnier, Founder of Hazard-S productions. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family,” Kero said. For a complete lineup, view detroitunderground.net/sept29/BACK.jpg. You’ll like it a lot. | RDW
