Detroit By Design:
It’s Okay They’re Here
For six months now Detroit By Design has been flipping the script on
the “average art show” by infusing different elements to keep things
fresh. The organization helped to relocate the 555 Studio/Gallery from
Ann Arbor to the Motor City and has since been recognized as a new, yet
solid addition of art, promotion and photogarphy. Following a lengthy
history of creative exhibition with Superbadass Productions, DBD has a
knack for bringing talented artists, performers and musicians out of
the dim light and into the limelight.
Right around the corner (as in both the date and location) is Detroit
By Design’s six month anniversary event titled “It’s Okay, We’re Here.”
This event will combine fashion, art and skateboarding into one
culture-packed evening. “Counter Culture, Street Culture and community
politics have always been the cornerstone of our events,” says Rich
Rice, DBD Director of Operations and Co-Founder of the Woodbridge
Creative Coalition. “Our shows dip under the radar and put together
elements that you won't find with the other big promoters and clubs.”
The show, curated by guests Nancy Barr (DIA) and Carlo McCormick (Paper
Magazine, NYC), will display the talent of several Detroit artists
including artwork by Davin Brainard, The Taormina Brothers, 7Teen, Matt
Gordon, Camilo and Monte Martinez to name a few. Runway fashions (which
will also be worn by the skaters) provided by Wound duo Sarah Lurtz and
Sarah Lapinski and Zack Ostrowski from Superior Belly. “We only like to
get our hands dirty in the best shows,” adds Detroit designer Sarah
Lurtz. “This show will be wildly different from our last. The clothing
will be a throwback on the golden days fused with a little corporate
mayhem.”
Mayhem indeed. Throw in a custom-built half pipe and live skate shows
by Daykare, Detroit Skate Company, Skull Skates and world famous
Skateboard Pro Bill Danforth plus music and video by Media Rica, People
Mover Productions, Eric Early and Craig Meams — sounds like all the
right elements for a good time. | RDW
