DFW: Student Showcase & Party By Design Highlights

Posted by Ris Tena on Tue, Sep 27, 2011 at 2:54 PM

  • WRITTEN / PHOTOS BY LARITA TRIPLETT OF LOVENOTE FOR MOTOWN COUTURE

Detroit Fashion Week partnered up with the Detroit Design Festival (DDF) kicking off its 2-day student fashion showcase on Friday, September 23rd at Willy's Overland Loft on Canfield. The mood of the space: fashion ready. The focal point: the white runway, with aligned chairs on either side and a simple black backdrop. Walking into the large warehouse space, passed the red carpet off to the left was one of the several dining designs throughout the space done for Design Industries Foundation Fighting Aids's Dining by Design and Party By Design.

Show was scheduled to start promptly at 7:30pm and end at 9:30pm. If you are not familiar with Detroit Fashion Week (DFW) or its showcases and did not have a DDF schedule, when it came time for the fashion show to start clarification of the showcase being primarily students was not made, but didn't take away from the amount of talent of the designers. At 8:42pm after hosts of the night Adriel Thornton and CW Detroit's Gossip Girl Bethany hit the runway with thank yous to sponsors it was showtime. 14 designers showed spring designs that ranged from tops with embellishments to well constructed shorts to knee length dresses, many designs having the common theme of edgy or feminine. As names were announced indistinctly, models walked from the the other side of the loft, where the Party By Design was to be held, giving the audience a preview before hitting the runway.

Anticipation of the designs was built and as the show went on expectations were surpassed. One of my favorites was Lindsey Robinson. With a soft color palette including baby blue, white, and khaki, Lindsey created feminine classic pieces focusing on details making pieces like the white cotton collared button up look sexy with cut outs at the shoulders. Danielle Mansoor also played with detail using fringe and chains in unexpected places such as a belt/ draping around an all black dress. Crowd shocker Mariella Amador, showing seven designs, closed the show with a revealing black halter dress that shimmered in the light. As I got over my initial shock I appreciated the dress. It pushed the fashion boundary that of Detroit Fashion Week making Mariella someone to look out for. At the end of the show, Mariella was presented with the Katerina Bocci Heart of Design Award, an award presented to designers that exemplifies hard work making a contribution to the Young Survivor Coalition.

After the closing remarks, Party By Design was on and popping and what a time to be had. All in all, Detroit Fashion Week 2011 was a success and I am looking forward to next year's bigger and bolder showcase. DFW Press Party & Designer Reception "Blueprint" Highlights

Posted by Ris Tena on Wed, Sep 21, 2011 at 12:34 AM

P9185870.jpg

Detroit Fashion Week (DFW) kicked off their Spring/Summer 2012 festivities at the Royal Oak Emagine Theatre mezzanine, the event hosted by Detroit brand, Uneek Collection. Guests were greeted with a red carpet backdrop and an impromptu camera interview upon entrance. Fashion's familiar faces were mingling on the upper level of the theatre, with Emagine providing a night-life sort of atmosphere with a total sound system, dim lights, and a full bar. The night consisted of designer previews, a dancing light show, runway shows, a live beauty enactment, live musical performances, and "Chive Talk."

We have to say, the Chive Talk hostesses definitely stole the show with their undeniable presence. Each word expressed with enthusiasm, the Chive Talk ladies did not fail to let us know what they represented: herbs. "Herbs?" you may say. Yes, as in, thyme, anis, lemongrass - herbs. They did tie in the extrinsic subject by demonstrating how you can cut up your t-shirt in a fashionable manner while using Chive Talk tees. As entertaining as the herbal vivacity and sexual commentary were, most of us went home having nightmares about Herbal Betty (we will spare you with those details).

The highlight of the evening was, of course, the fashion. DFW designers who are showcasing their collections later in the week provided a preview during the event, hanging around with a represented model by their side wearing one of their looks.
We were graced with two runway shows for the night. The first designer, Siana Treece, showed a tribal-inspired women's collection. The dresses displayed ranged from mini and spunky to maxi and sexy.
Uneek Collection gave us a full show displaying their graphic tees. The t-shirts were urban-inspired with images of boomboxes and headphones; designs also included typography logos and a full layout of what Uneek stands for: Uniting Nationalities by Encouraging Education & Knowledge.

Fanciee SS12 Styling Collection @ Maendeleo

Posted by Ris Tena on Mon, Sep 19, 2011 at 11:38 AM

P9175799.jpg

Detroit's premiere fashion stylist, Tyna Logan aka Fanciee, held a fashion presentation to display her African-inspired Spring/Summer 2012 Styling Collection at event, "Maendeleo," which she also coordinated.

Maendeleo (Swahili for "progress"), is built upon the concepts of self-expression and individuality; this event will focus and bring awareness to the urban underground culture that makes Detroit maendeleo. The doors to this sub-cullture will be opened and welcome the masses to a fashion, music, and art experience.

The collection featured bold African prints, tribal-style face and body painting, and braided hair - looks that embraced traditional African "fashion," if you will; Fanciee modernized the looks by turning traditional fabrics into a bustier-style jumper, a T-neck dress, and high-waisted bottoms. The garments were designed by Fanciee herself, taking it to a seamstress to construct her visions. The event was held at Detroit art & tattoo studio space, The Untitled Bottega, run by artists Flaco Shalom & Lady L Tattoos. See the full presentation and event credits after the jump:

NYFW SS12: coExist Collection by Stevie Boi "The Ultimate Man"

  • WRITTEN BY JASON SIEGFRIED PHOTOS BY WINNIE JENG OF NYCRUNWAYS.COM FOR MOTOWN COUTURE

Stevie Boi—the eyewear designer behind some of Lady Gaga's (and let's not forget Snookie) most famous music video shades —hosted a press event showing off his pieces, including from his newest "coExist" collection, on a humid and sultry afternoon in Harlem barbershop B Braxton's. The Baltimore-based designer's collection is far from restrained, featuring copious amounts of crosses, spikes, and studs. Some of the most interesting pieces were his masquerade-style masks which were in the shape of guns, brass knuckles, and hatchets. There's no question that Stevie Boi combines street fashion and haute couture in best possible way.

Take a closer look:

NYFW SS12: Factory by Erik Hart

Posted by Ris Tena on Tue, Sep 13, 2011 at 11:18 PM

IMG_4230.jpg
  • PHOTOS & WRITE-UP BY WINNIE JENG / NYCRUNWAYS.COM FOR MOTOWN COUTURE

Factory by Erik Hart set out in style with the setting sun and wood paneled High Line Room of The Standard Hotel. The Meatpacking District of New York City provided the scenic background as catchy 80's remakes played. This collection began very stark and classic, with lots of black and white and pops of color here and there. At the end, the collection transformed to several screaming-neon dresses, followed by strict gray and black. The highlights of the show were the sexy cuts and clean lines.
